Bangkok!!!!

Bangkok, what can I say? Its dirty, smoggy, full of people harrassing you to buy stuff, loads of old decrepid western guys with thai beauties on their arm (thats probably not all they're on!!!)and a whole heap of other negative factors....but I absolutely love it!

We treated ourselves to slightly more expensive accommodation having checked out the cheaper options on the Kho San Road. We walked into this beautiful lobby, with a water feature and smiling staff. However, don't be fooled...they invest in their beautiful lobby to draw you in, and then they show you the room that you've already agreed to pay for! Not quite what is expected. The shower curtain for example was like a microbiology lab...growing all sorts. I just have to remember that I am fully vaccinated, and that what doesn't kill me makes me stronger!

The Khao San Road is amazing albeit geared towards tourism. The street is lined with market traders selling everything under the sun. Masses of food stalls from falafel to deep fryed locusts, nothing goes to waste out here! I tried to resist the temptation of the clothing...i failed! Although I wish I had because my rucksack hasn't been so accommodating. It will be burned on return to english soil, or potentially traded for a huge wheely suitcase in Oz. I'm not cut out for the backpacker lifestyle.

We obviously visited the palace and the temple...absolutely stunning. They're both really beautiful and should not be missed. I also had my fortune told, but i'll do what I do with my horoscopes, pick out the bits I like. Jim Thompsons House was interesting. He's a guy who restarted the silk industry in thailand, then went off for a walk and hasn't been seen since.

One of my favourite days was a guided tour to the Bridge over the River Kwai...a really tranquil place steeped in history (obviously!). We spent a few hours on an old train going over the river Kwai, which reminded me of the Bluebell Railway back home. I somehow think I haven't done it justice, but you get the idea.

I also had a thai massage. My advice would be not to have a guy doing it...it hurts! I have never been pushed and pulled in so many directions, and heard my joints crack quite so loud. An experience, but now slightly apprehensive about repeating it.

You'll either love Bangkok or you'll hate it. Go expecting the worst, and you can't be disappointed.
